Desk Report:
Elon Musk has always expressed his strong dissatisfaction with Wikipedia, the world’s largest online free encyclopedia. Now, the American billionaire has announced a direct alternative to it. His AI company XAI (XAI) is creating a new open-source knowledge repository, called ‘Grokipedia’. Musk claims that it will be much better than Wikipedia and will be based only on ‘truth and information’.
Musk has called Wikipedia by various names such as ‘Wokipedia’ and ‘Dickipedia’ at various times. He has also called for donors to stop donating. Observers believe that Elon Musk‘s move has given rise to a new conflict over the control of knowledge and truth in the information age.
According to Elon Musk’s announcement, Grokipedia will be a vast knowledge repository, where ‘truth is the only goal’! This project is an important step towards XAI’s larger goal of understanding the universe.
Musk wrote on his X handle, “We are building Grokipedia on XAI. It will be vastly superior to Wikipedia. Frankly, it is a necessary step towards XAI’s goal of understanding the universe.”
He added that the repository will be open to everyone and there will be no restrictions on its use. He believes that Grokipedia will soon become the most trusted source of information and truth for every AI and human.
Why is Musk angry with Wikipedia?
According to Musk, Wikipedia is ideologically steeped in left-wing or “Woke” bias in its editorial process, funding priorities, and handling of politically sensitive topics.
Musk’s main complaint is that Wikipedia’s unpaid editors, especially on sensitive biographies and political topics, are influenced by hard-leftists.
In October 2024, Musk took down a Wikipedia article titled “Donald Trump and Fascism,” complaining that only two editors had produced a coherent narrative using sources from left-leaning outlets.
Musk claimed that this bias made Wikipedia unreliable for training AI.
Musk is also unhappy with his own Wikipedia entry. He claims that it is negative and difficult to correct due to editor privileges.
He has a long-standing dispute over the recognition of Tesla’s founder. He is angry that the page gives credit to the co-founders. The same page describes him as a conspiracy theorist and a propagator of COVID-19 misinformation—which Elon Musk sees as slander by biased editors.
Elon Musk previously sparked controversy in January 2025 by giving a controversial “salute” at Trump’s victory celebration in the presidential election. After the incident was mentioned on the person page, Musk called for a boycott of Wikipedia, saying, “Stop funding Wikipedia until balance is restored!”
Musk alleged that Wikipedia was misusing grant money on “Woke” initiatives instead of its core work under its non-profit model. In December 2024, he claimed that Wikipedia had spent nearly $50 million on diversity, fairness, and inclusion, which he called a fraud.
